ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS
Why this applies to Nusinersen Sodium
Nusinersen Sodium falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Tiratricol interacts with.
Tiratricol is related to thyroid hormones such as levothyroxine. The hypoprothrombinemic effects of oral anticoagulants, including warfarin (Coumadin), are increased by levothyroxine due to increased catabolism of vitamin K-dependent clotting factors. It is not known if tiratricol has a similar effect.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's something important to clear up. The interaction in our database really applies to oral blood thinners like warfarin, where a thyroid-type compound like tiratricol could theoretically boost the blood-thinning effect and raise bleeding risk. Nusinersen (Spinraza) is a very different kind of medicine. It's not a prodrug, it isn't a blood thinner, and it works locally in the spinal fluid to increase a protein that nerves and muscles need. So this particular tiratricol interaction doesn't really fit Spinraza.
That said, I'd still steer you away from tiratricol entirely. The FDA has warned that it's an unapproved, risky ingredient that can stress the heart and thyroid. Please loop in your doctor or pharmacist before adding any supplement while on Spinraza.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Nusinersen Sodium page
“Spinraza (nusinersen) is given by spinal injection to treat spinal muscular atrophy, and it carries its own warnings for low platelets and kidney stress, which makes the 208 supplements on this page worth real vigilance rather than a shrug. All but six of them, 202 ingredients, could raise bleeding risk by thinning the blood or dulling…”
