Theoretically, concomitant use of CYP1A2 inhibitors and yerba mate might increase levels and adverse effects of the caffeine in yerba mate.
Yerba mate contains caffeine. Caffeine is metabolized by CYP1A2. Theoretically, drugs that inhibit CYP1A2 may decrease the rate of caffeine clearance and increase caffeine levels.

Here's the thing to know about pairing your daily mate with citalopram (Celexa): the concern isn't really about the citalopram changing. Instead, citalopram can mildly slow down an enzyme in your liver called CYP1A2, which is the same one that breaks down the caffeine in yerba mate. So in theory, the caffeine may hang around a bit longer than usual.

What that could feel like is the familiar caffeine stuff turned up a notch: feeling jittery, a racing heart, trouble sleeping, or an upset stomach. This is rated as a minor, theory-based interaction, so most people who drink mate in moderation do fine. If you notice extra wired or anxious feelings, simply ease back on the mate and chat with your pharmacist or doctor.

Here's the gist: lab studies suggest yerba mate can gently slow down a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, and your body uses that enzyme as one of the ways it clears citalopram. In theory, if that pathway slows, a bit more citalopram could linger in your system, which might nudge up side effects like drowsiness, nausea, dry mouth, or feeling jittery.

That said, I want to keep this in perspective. This is rated a minor interaction based only on test-tube research, not real people, so for most folks enjoying mate in normal amounts it's unlikely to cause trouble. One thing worth knowing: citalopram can affect heart rhythm at higher levels, and yerba mate's caffeine can add to that restless, racing-heart feeling. If you drink mate daily or notice new symptoms, check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Citalopram Used For?

Brand name: Celexa

Citalopram — available as tablets (including brand Celexa), oral solution, and capsules — is used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults. This includes depression that causes persistent low mood, loss of interest in everyday activities, changes in sleep or appetite, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating.

Citalopram capsules are specifically indicated for adults with MDD but are not intended for starting or stopping treatment — another citalopram product must be used for dose titration. All forms are indicated for adults only; citalopram tablets are not approved for use in children.
