Theoretically, the caffeine in yerba mate might reduce the effects of felbamate and increase the risk for convulsion.
Yerba mate contains caffeine. Animal research shows that a high dose of caffeine 161.7 mg/kg can decreases the anticonvulsant activity of felbamate. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the simple version: yerba mate has caffeine in it, and caffeine is a brain stimulant. Felbamate works the opposite way, by calming down the abnormal electrical activity that triggers seizures. So in theory, a lot of caffeine could work against what felbamate is trying to do and make seizures a bit more likely to break through.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It comes from animal studies using very high caffeine doses, and nothing like it has actually been reported in people. A cup or two of mate probably isn't a real concern for most folks. Still, because seizure control is something you don't want to gamble with, it's worth mentioning your mate habit to your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you're drinking large amounts.

About Felbamate

What Is Felbamate Used For?

Brand name: Felbatol

Felbamate is not a first-line seizure medication. It is used only when a person's epilepsy has not responded well enough to other treatments and the seizures are severe enough that the serious risks of this drug are considered acceptable.

In adults, felbamate can be used alone or alongside other antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) to treat partial seizures (seizures that start in one part of the brain), with or without spreading to become a full seizure. In children, felbamate is used as an add-on treatment for both partial and generalized seizures linked to Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a severe form of childhood epilepsy. Felbatol is specifically labeled for these uses in both adults and children.
