These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Yerba Mate interacts with whole categories of medication. Fexofenadine, Pseudoephedrine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Yerba Mate in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
STIMULANT DRUGS
1 of 2Why this applies to Fexofenadine, Pseudoephedrine
Fexofenadine, Pseudoephedrine falls under STIMULANT DRUGS — the group Yerba Mate interacts with.
Yerba mate contains caffeine. Due to the CNS stimulant effects of the caffeine, concomitant use can increase the risk of adverse effects.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the simple version: Allegra-D contains pseudoephedrine, a decongestant that revs up your nervous system. Yerba mate brings its own kick from caffeine. Stack the two and you're basically piling one stimulant on top of another. The fexofenadine (antihistamine) part isn't the concern here, it's the pseudoephedrine plus the caffeine.
What might you notice? A racing or pounding heart, feeling jittery or anxious, trouble sleeping, or a bump in blood pressure. This is mostly based on expert opinion rather than hard studies, so it's a reasonable caution, not a red alert. A single cup of mate probably won't do much, but heavy daily mate while taking Allegra-D could push things. If you have high blood pressure or heart issues, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Fexofenadine, Pseudoephedrine also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that yerba mate extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking yerba mate may increase levels and adverse effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the honest picture with Allegra-D (fexofenadine plus pseudoephedrine) and yerba mate. The concern on file is that yerba mate might block an enzyme called CYP3A4, which could let certain drugs build up a bit. But this comes only from test-tube research, not from real people, so I'd file it under theoretical rather than something I see causing problems.
On top of that, fexofenadine isn't really cleared by CYP3A4 to a meaningful degree, so this pathway matters little here. The bigger real-world overlap is simpler: yerba mate has caffeine, and the pseudoephedrine part is already a stimulant. Together they can leave you jittery, racing-hearted, or wide awake at night. If you notice that, ease up on the mate and check with your pharmacist.

About Yerba Mate
What is Yerba Mate?
- Energy and alertness
- Weight loss
- Mental focus
- Digestive support
- Antioxidant support
Yerba mate is a caffeine-containing herbal beverage from South America that is widely enjoyed for its stimulating, coffee-like effects. While it is rich in antioxidants and is being studied for weight, blood sugar, and cholesterol, strong human evidence for most health claims is limited. Drinking very hot mate over many years has been linked to higher risk of certain cancers, so enjoy it warm and in moderation.
