Isocarboxazid falls under MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS (MAOIs) — the group Yerba Mate interacts with.

Theoretically, the caffeine in yerba mate might increase risk of a hypertensive crisis when used concomitantly with MAOIs.
Yerba mate contains caffeine. Caffeine has been shown to inhibit monoamine oxidase (MAO) A and B in laboratory studies. Concomitant intake of large amounts of caffeine with MAOIs might precipitate a hypertensive crisis. In a case report, a patient that consumed 10-12 cups of caffeinated coffee and took the MAOI tranylcypromine presented with severe hypertension. Hypertension was resolved after the patient switched to drinking decaffeinated coffee.

Here's the thing to keep in mind: Marplan (isocarboxazid) is a powerful MAO inhibitor, and yerba mate is loaded with caffeine. On their own, neither is a huge deal, but together the worry is that the caffeine could push your blood pressure up too far. The concern, which is mostly theoretical and based on how these compounds behave in lab studies plus an older case report, is a sudden spike called a hypertensive crisis. Warning signs would be a pounding headache, a racing or thumping heartbeat, chest tightness, sweating, or feeling flushed.

A cup now and then likely isn't the problem, but drinking large amounts (think many strong servings a day) is where the risk climbs. Please talk with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing the two so you stay on the safe side.

What Is Isocarboxazid Used For?

Brand name: Marplan

Marplan (isocarboxazid) is indicated for the treatment of depression — specifically, major depressive disorder. Because it carries serious risks, it is not a first-choice antidepressant. Marplan is generally reserved for patients who have not responded adequately to other antidepressants.

Clinical trials showed Marplan to be effective in adult outpatients with major depressive disorder, including those whose depression was accompanied by anxiety symptoms such as panic or phobias. Marplan is not approved for use in children or adolescents.
