Saquinavir falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Yerba Mate interacts with.

Theoretically, yerba mate might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that yerba mate extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking yerba mate may increase levels and adverse effects of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here's the basic idea with saquinavir (Invirase): your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear it out of your body. Lab studies (done in test tubes, not in people) suggest yerba mate may slow that enzyme down a bit. In theory, that could let saquinavir build up slightly, which might nudge up side effects like nausea, diarrhea, stomach upset, or headache.

I want to be honest about how shaky this one is. It's only based on early lab work, the effect is rated minor, and a warm cup or two of mate is unlikely to cause real trouble. Saquinavir is always taken with ritonavir, which already strongly affects this same pathway, so mate is a small player here. Still, if you drink mate regularly, it's worth a quick mention to your HIV pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Saquinavir Used For?

Brand names: Invirase, Fortovase

  • Saquinavir is used in combination with ritonavir (Norvir) and other medications to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Saquinavir is in a class of medications called protease inhibitors. It works by decreasing the amount of HIV in the blood. Although saquinavir does not cure HIV, it may decrease your chance of developing acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and HIV-related illnesses such as serious infections or cancer. Taking these medications along with practicing safer sex and making other lifestyle changes may decrease the risk of transmitting the HIV virus to other people.
