Here's the gist: yerba mate naturally contains caffeine, and caffeine is a stimulant that can nudge your heart to beat a little harder and faster. Vibegron (Gemtesa) works on beta-3 receptors to relax your bladder, and like other drugs in the broader beta-agonist family, it can theoretically have mild effects on the heart too. Stacking caffeine on top could, in theory, add to that, leaving you feeling jittery, with a racing or pounding heartbeat, or a slight bump in blood pressure.

One thing to keep in mind: this concern is theoretical, based on how these compounds work, not on strong human studies. A normal cup or two of mate is unlikely to cause trouble for most people, but heavy daily use is where it matters more. If you notice palpitations or feel wired, check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

Theoretically, yerba mate might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that yerba mate extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking yerba mate may increase levels and adverse effects of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here's the gist with Gemtesa (vibegron) and yerba mate. Some lab studies suggest yerba mate can mildly slow down a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, which is one of the pathways your body uses to clear vibegron. In theory, if that pathway slows, a little more vibegron could hang around, which might nudge up side effects like headache, dry mouth, constipation, or a slightly higher blood pressure reading.

I want to keep this in perspective, though. This concern comes only from test-tube research, not from real people, and the interaction is rated as minor. A normal cup or two of mate is unlikely to cause trouble. If you drink it daily or use concentrated mate supplements, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

What Is Vibegron Used For?

Brand name: Gemtesa

Gemtesa (vibegron) is used to treat overactive bladder (OAB) in adults. Specifically, it targets the three main OAB symptoms: sudden strong urges to urinate, leaking urine when you feel that urge (urge urinary incontinence), and needing to urinate too often.

Gemtesa is also approved for adult men who have OAB symptoms and are already taking medication for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) — an enlarged prostate.
