Chanca Piedra and Estradiol, Progesterone

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Chanca Piedra interacts with whole categories of medication. Estradiol, Progesterone falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Chanca Piedra in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

1 of 2

Why this applies to Estradiol, Progesterone

Estradiol, Progesterone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Chanca Piedra interacts with.

Theoretically, chanca piedra might reduce the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that chanca piedra extract increases CYP1A2 activity. Theoretically, chanca piedra might increase metabolism of CYP1A2 substrates and lower serum concentrations. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the gist with Bijuva (estradiol and progesterone). Your body clears these hormones partly through a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. Lab studies suggest chanca piedra may speed that enzyme up. If that happens in real life, your hormones could be broken down a little faster, which might lower their levels and weaken the benefit you're after, like more hot flashes, night sweats, or breakthrough spotting.

I want to be honest about how soft this is. This concern comes only from test-tube research and has never been reported in actual people, so it may not matter at all. Still, since hormone therapy is something you take steadily, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding chanca piedra rather than guessing on your own.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

2 of 2

Estradiol, Progesterone also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, use of chanca piedra might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that chanca piedra extract inhibits CYP3A4. Theoretically, chanca piedra might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Your Bijuva combines two hormones, estradiol and progesterone, and your body clears both partly through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Chanca piedra has been shown to slow that enzyme down, but only in lab dish studies so far. The thinking is that if the enzyme works slower, these hormones could linger a bit longer and build up, which in theory might nudge up side effects like breast tenderness, bloating, nausea, headaches, mood changes, or spotting.

Here is the important part: this has never actually been seen in real people, so it stays a theoretical concern. Still, since hormone levels matter, I would simply mention to your pharmacist or doctor that you are considering chanca piedra before adding it, rather than starting or stopping anything on your own.

About Chanca Piedra

What is Chanca Piedra?

Chanca Piedra
  • Kidney stones
  • Gallstones
  • Liver support
  • Urinary tract health
  • Digestive complaints

Chanca piedra is a tropical herb traditionally used as a 'stone breaker' for kidney and gallstones, and for liver and urinary health. Human evidence for these uses is limited and mostly small or preliminary, so it should not replace proven treatments. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a medical condition or take medications.
