These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Chanca Piedra interacts with whole categories of medication. Levonorgestrel, Ethinyl Estradiol falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Chanca Piedra in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES
1 of 2Why this applies to Levonorgestrel, Ethinyl Estradiol
Levonorgestrel, Ethinyl Estradiol falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Chanca Piedra interacts with.
In vitro research shows that chanca piedra extract increases CYP1A2 activity. Theoretically, chanca piedra might increase metabolism of CYP1A2 substrates and lower serum concentrations. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for your birth control pill (the levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol combo). In lab dish studies, chanca piedra appeared to speed up an enzyme called CYP1A2, which is one of the pathways that helps break down estrogen. The theory is that revving up this enzyme could clear the estrogen a little faster and lower its levels in your blood. With a contraceptive, anything that nudges hormone levels down is worth respecting, since the worry would be reduced reliability and possible breakthrough spotting or bleeding.
That said, this is only seen in test tubes, not in real people, so it's far from proven. Still, because pregnancy prevention is the goal, I'd run it past your pharmacist or doctor before pairing the two, and don't change your pill on your own.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Levonorgestrel, Ethinyl Estradiol also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that chanca piedra extract inhibits CYP3A4. Theoretically, chanca piedra might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Your birth control pill (Nordette, Microgynon, and similar) contains two hormones, ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel, that your liver clears in part through an enzyme called CYP3A4. In lab dishes, chanca piedra appears to slow that enzyme down. In theory, that could let a bit more hormone build up in your body, which might mean slightly more of the usual estrogen-type side effects like nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, or spotting.
Here is the reassuring part: this is based only on test-tube research and has never been reported in real people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, since reliable birth control matters, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two. Please don't stop or change your pill on your own.

About Chanca Piedra
What is Chanca Piedra?
- Kidney stones
- Gallstones
- Liver support
- Urinary tract health
- Digestive complaints
Chanca piedra is a tropical herb traditionally used as a 'stone breaker' for kidney and gallstones, and for liver and urinary health.
