Why this applies to Pazopanib

Pazopanib falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Chanca Piedra interacts with.

Theoretically, chanca piedra might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs.
In vitro research suggests that methyl brevifolincarboxylate, a constituent isolated from chanca piedra, can inhibit platelet aggregation. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the situation with chanca piedra and pazopanib (Votrient). Pazopanib itself can already raise your bleeding risk, which is something we watch for with this kidney cancer medication. In lab dishes, one compound found in chanca piedra appeared to slow platelets (the cells that help your blood clot) from clumping together. Stacking that on top of pazopanib could, in theory, nudge your bleeding risk a little higher.

The key word is theoretical. This platelet effect has only been seen in test tubes, never confirmed in actual people, so I don't want to alarm you. Still, with cancer treatment, it's worth a quick chat with your oncologist or pharmacist before adding this herb. Watch for easy bruising, nosebleeds, or unusual bleeding and report them.

Pazopanib also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, use of chanca piedra might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that chanca piedra extract inhibits CYP3A4. Theoretically, chanca piedra might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the thinking behind this pairing. Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down and clear pazopanib. In lab testing, chanca piedra appears to slow that same enzyme down. If it does the same thing in real life, less pazopanib would get cleared, so more could build up in your system.

With a cancer drug like pazopanib, that matters because higher levels can mean stronger side effects, things like high blood pressure, diarrhea, nausea, fatigue, and changes in liver tests. That said, this is only a theoretical concern from test-tube studies, and it has never actually been reported in people. Still, pazopanib is a serious medication with little wiggle room, so please don't add chanca piedra without first checking with your oncologist or pharmacist.

About Pazopanib

What Is Pazopanib Used For?

Brand name: Votrient

Pazopanib tablets — sold as the brand Votrient and as generic pazopanib — are used to treat two types of advanced cancer in adults: advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC), the most common form of kidney cancer, and advanced soft tissue sarcoma (STS) in patients who have already received prior chemotherapy.

Important limitation: Pazopanib has not been shown to work in adipocytic soft tissue sarcoma (a subtype involving fat cells) or in gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs), so it is not used for those cancers.
