Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version. Actifed combines pseudoephedrine, a decongestant that perks up your nervous system, with triprolidine, an antihistamine. Coffee adds its own stimulant, caffeine. So when you pair the two, you're basically stacking one stimulant on top of another. That can nudge up the side effects you'd already get from the pseudoephedrine, like feeling jittery or wired, a racing or pounding heartbeat, trouble sleeping, and sometimes a bump in blood pressure.

This is rated as a theoretical, expert-opinion concern, so it's more of a heads-up than a hard rule. For most healthy folks, one normal cup is unlikely to cause trouble. If you tend to be caffeine-sensitive, or you have heart issues or high blood pressure, go easy and check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Pseudoephedrine, Triprolidine page

“Ephedra is the interaction I would rule out first for anyone taking pseudoephedrine with triprolidine (Actifed, Triposed). Stacking a second stimulant on a decongestant that already raises blood pressure and heart rate invites real cardiovascular trouble, and that logic runs through most of this list, which deserves genuine care rather…”

About Coffee

What is Coffee?

  • Alertness and reducing fatigue
  • Mental focus and concentration
  • Athletic performance
  • Headache relief
  • Weight management

Coffee is a widely consumed beverage made from roasted coffee beans, valued mainly for its caffeine, which boosts alertness and energy. For most healthy adults, moderate coffee intake is generally safe and may have some health benefits, but too much can cause jitteriness, poor sleep, and a faster heartbeat. People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or sensitive to caffeine should limit their intake and check with a doctor or pharmacist.
