Here's the thing to understand about this pairing: the worry isn't with your atazanavir (Reyataz) itself, it's with the caffeine in cola nut. Atazanavir can slow down a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which happens to be the same enzyme your body uses to clear caffeine. So the caffeine from cola nut may hang around longer and build up more than usual.

In real life, that could mean stronger caffeine effects: feeling jittery or restless, a racing or pounding heart, trouble sleeping, or a slight bump in blood pressure. This is a theoretical concern based on how these compounds work, not something proven in studies, so don't panic. Still, if you notice you're more wired than expected, it's worth mentioning to your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

About Atazanavir

What Is Atazanavir Used For?

Brand name: Reyataz

Atazanavir capsules are used together with other antiretroviral medicines to treat HIV-1 infection in adults and in children 6 years and older who weigh at least 15 kg (about 33 lbs).

Reyataz — available as capsules and as an oral powder — is also approved for HIV-1 treatment in adults and in children as young as 3 months who weigh at least 5 kg (about 11 lbs). Reyataz oral powder must always be taken with ritonavir and food, and is not for use in children weighing less than 5 kg.
