Cola nut contains caffeine. Animal research suggests that caffeine can decrease the anticonvulsant activity of valproate. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist with cola nut and your Depakote (divalproex sodium). Cola nut's main active ingredient is caffeine, and the concern is that caffeine may slightly blunt how well valproate calms overactive brain activity. In animal studies, caffeine reduced valproate's anti-seizure effect, which could in theory make seizures harder to control or, if you take it for bipolar or migraines, weaken those benefits too.

That said, I want to keep this in perspective. This is theoretical and based only on animal research. It hasn't actually been seen in people, so I wouldn't panic over a single cola or chocolate. The bigger caution would be regularly using concentrated cola nut or caffeine supplements. Before adding anything stimulant-heavy, check with your pharmacist or doctor, especially since seizure control matters so much.

Specifically, they are approved for complex partial seizures (either alone or with other seizure types) as monotherapy or add-on therapy, and for simple and complex absence seizures as sole therapy or add-on therapy.
