Anagrelide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Ephedra interacts with.

Theoretically, ephedra might decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
Some animal research suggests that ephedra induces CYP1A2 and increases the clearance of CYP1A2 substrates such as caffeine.

Here's the situation with anagrelide (Agrylin) and ephedra. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP1A2 to help break down anagrelide. Some early animal lab research hints that ephedra may speed that enzyme up, which could clear anagrelide out of your body a little faster and make it work less well. In practice, that might mean your platelet count isn't controlled as tightly as your doctor wants.

I want to be straight with you though: this is only a theoretical concern from animal data, so we really don't know how much it matters in people. The bigger issue is that ephedra is banned in supplements and is itself risky for your heart and blood pressure. Please don't use it, and check in with your pharmacist or doctor about safer options.

Brand name: Agrylin

Both Agrylin and generic anagrelide capsules are used to treat thrombocythemia secondary to myeloproliferative neoplasms — a condition where bone marrow disorders cause dangerously high platelet counts. The goal is to bring platelet counts down, lower the risk of dangerous blood clots (thrombosis), and ease related symptoms including bleeding and clotting events.
