Here's the simple version: metaproterenol (Alupent) is a beta-agonist, meaning it stimulates your heart and lungs to open the airways. Ephedra is also a stimulant, working on that same fight-or-flight system. So when you combine them, you're essentially pushing the gas pedal twice. The concern is that the two together could overstimulate your heart, leading to a faster or pounding heartbeat, tremor or shakiness, jitteriness, and a jump in blood pressure.

This warning is theoretical, based on how both substances work rather than hard human studies, so don't panic if you've taken them near each other. That said, ephedra is banned in U.S. supplements for good reason. Please skip ephedra-containing products and ask your pharmacist or doctor about safer choices.
