Ephedra and Tasimelteon

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to Tasimelteon

Tasimelteon falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Ephedra interacts with.

Theoretically, ephedra might decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
Some animal research suggests that ephedra induces CYP1A2 and increases the clearance of CYP1A2 substrates such as caffeine.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for Hetlioz (tasimelteon): your body relies on an enzyme called CYP1A2 to clear it out. Some early animal studies hint that ephedra may speed that enzyme up. If that holds true in people, your system could break down tasimelteon a bit faster, leaving less of it around to do its job.

For a sleep medicine, that mostly means it might work less reliably, so you could see your sleep schedule slip back out of sync or have a harder time falling asleep at night. I want to be honest though: this is only a theoretical concern based on lab and animal data, not proven in humans. Beyond that, ephedra is a stimulant that isn't sold in U.S. supplements because of serious heart and stroke risks, and it works against good sleep anyway. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining anything with tasimelteon.
