Green Coffee and Quinapril

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Quinapril

Quinapril falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Green Coffee interacts with.

Theoretically, taking green coffee with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Clinical studies have shown that green coffee extract decreases blood pressure. When used with antihypertensive drugs, green coffee might have additive blood pressure-lowering effects. However, this has not been shown in clinical research.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: Quinapril (Accupril) is your blood pressure medicine, and green coffee may gently lower blood pressure too. Put them together and those effects could stack up a bit. The theory is that the chlorogenic acid in green coffee, plus some early studies, point to a mild drop in blood pressure on top of what Quinapril already does.

If your pressure dipped too low, you might feel lightheaded, dizzy, tired, or a little shaky when standing up fast. That said, this is rated minor and is mostly theoretical, so for most folks it's not a big deal. Keep in mind green coffee also has caffeine, which can nudge pressure the other way. If you take a concentrated supplement daily, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor and keep an eye on your home readings.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Quinapril page

“Quinapril (Accupril) lowers blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels, and that is where most of the 166 supplements and herbs on this list collide with it. The bulk either push its blood-pressure-lowering effect too far or work against it, and with six entries rated major, this page deserves a careful read, not a skim.”

About Green Coffee

What is Green Coffee?

Green Coffee
  • Weight loss
  • High blood pressure
  • Blood sugar control
  • Antioxidant support
  • General energy

Green coffee is the unroasted bean of the coffee plant, prized for its high chlorogenic acid content. Some early studies suggest modest benefits for weight, blood pressure, and blood sugar, but the evidence is limited and far from conclusive. It contains caffeine, so people sensitive to stimulants should use caution and check with a pharmacist or doctor first.
