Green Coffee and Amphetamine

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Green Coffee interacts with whole categories of medication. Amphetamine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Green Coffee in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

STIMULANT DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Amphetamine

Amphetamine falls under STIMULANT DRUGS — the group Green Coffee interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase stimulant adverse effects.
Green coffee can contain caffeine. Due to the central nervous system (CNS) stimulant effects of caffeine, concomitant use with stimulant drugs can increase the risk of adverse effects.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence C

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: green coffee naturally contains caffeine, and Amphetamine is already a strong central nervous system stimulant. Stack a stimulant on top of a stimulant and the effects can add up. So when people combine the two, they may feel more of the same things Amphetamine already does, like a racing or pounding heart, jitteriness, trouble sleeping, anxiety, or a bump in blood pressure.

I want to be honest that this is mostly based on expert reasoning rather than hard studies, so it's more of a sensible caution than a sure thing. A regular cup of coffee may be fine for many folks, while concentrated green coffee supplements deliver a bigger, less predictable caffeine load. If you notice your heart pounding or feel wired, loop in your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

Moderate

MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS (MAOIs)

2 of 2

Amphetamine also falls under MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS (MAOIs).

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the risk of a hypertensive crisis.
Green coffee can contain caffeine. Caffeine has been shown to inhibit monoamine oxidase (MAO) A and B in laboratory studies. Concomitant intake of large amounts of caffeine with MAOIs might precipitate a hypertensive crisis.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep in mind if you take amphetamine (like Dyanavel XR or Mydayis) for ADHD or narcolepsy. The concern on file is really about caffeine, which green coffee naturally contains. Caffeine is a stimulant, and amphetamine is too. Stacking two stimulants together can nudge your blood pressure and heart rate up, leaving you jittery, anxious, with a racing or pounding heart, or trouble sleeping.

I want to be honest about the evidence here: this is theoretical, based mostly on lab studies suggesting caffeine can mildly affect MAO enzymes. A cup of coffee probably isn't a big deal for most folks, but concentrated green coffee supplements deliver a bigger, less predictable dose. If you notice your heart pounding or feel wired, check in with your pharmacist or doctor before going further.

About Green Coffee

What is Green Coffee?

Green Coffee
  • Weight loss
  • High blood pressure
  • Blood sugar control
  • Antioxidant support
  • General energy

Green coffee is the unroasted bean of the coffee plant, prized for its high chlorogenic acid content. Some early studies suggest modest benefits for weight, blood pressure, and blood sugar, but the evidence is limited and far from conclusive. It contains caffeine, so people sensitive to stimulants should use caution and check with a pharmacist or doctor first.
