Green Coffee and Brompheniramine, Phenylephrine, Phenylpropanolamine

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Green Coffee interacts with whole categories of medication. Brompheniramine, Phenylephrine, Phenylpropanolamine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Green Coffee in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

STIMULANT DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Brompheniramine, Phenylephrine, Phenylpropanolamine

Brompheniramine, Phenylephrine, Phenylpropanolamine falls under STIMULANT DRUGS — the group Green Coffee interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase stimulant adverse effects.
Green coffee can contain caffeine. Due to the central nervous system (CNS) stimulant effects of caffeine, concomitant use with stimulant drugs can increase the risk of adverse effects.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence C

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: this combo product contains phenylephrine and phenylpropanolamine, which are decongestants that act like mild stimulants on your body. Green coffee adds caffeine to the mix. Stacking two stimulant-type ingredients can pile on the same side effects, so you might notice a faster or pounding heartbeat, jitteriness, anxiousness, trouble sleeping, or a bump in blood pressure.

This is mostly a theoretical concern based on expert opinion, not strong studies, so it's not a reason to panic. A regular cup of coffee usually won't do much, but concentrated green coffee supplements give a bigger caffeine punch. If you have high blood pressure or heart issues, check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

PHENYLPROPANOLAMINE

2 of 2

Brompheniramine, Phenylephrine, Phenylpropanolamine also falls under PHENYLPROPANOLAMINE.

Theoretically, phenylpropanolamine might increase the risk of hypertension, as well as the levels and adverse effects of caffeine.
Green coffee can contain caffeine. Concomitant use of phenylpropanolamine and caffeine might cause an additive increase in blood pressure. Phenylpropanolamine also seems to increase caffeine serum levels.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence B

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to know about this combo: your medicine contains decongestants (phenylephrine and phenylpropanolamine) that already tighten blood vessels and can nudge your blood pressure up. Green coffee adds caffeine, a stimulant, on top of that. Together they can have an additive effect on blood pressure, and the decongestant may also slow how fast your body clears caffeine, so the caffeine can build up a bit more than usual.

In real life that might show up as a faster heart rate, jitteriness, trouble sleeping, headache, or a higher blood pressure reading. This is largely theoretical and depends on how much caffeine the green coffee actually has, but it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them, especially if you have high blood pressure.

About Green Coffee

What is Green Coffee?

Green Coffee
  • Weight loss
  • High blood pressure
  • Blood sugar control
  • Antioxidant support
  • General energy

Green coffee is the unroasted bean of the coffee plant, prized for its high chlorogenic acid content. Some early studies suggest modest benefits for weight, blood pressure, and blood sugar, but the evidence is limited and far from conclusive. It contains caffeine, so people sensitive to stimulants should use caution and check with a pharmacist or doctor first.
