Green Coffee and Indapamide

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Green Coffee interacts with whole categories of medication. Indapamide falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Green Coffee in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

DIURETIC DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Indapamide

Indapamide falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Green Coffee interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the risk of hypokalemia.
Green coffee can contain caffeine. Caffeine, especially in excessive amounts, can reduce potassium levels due to stimulation of the sodium-potassium pump. Diuretics can also cause lower potassium levels.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing about pairing green coffee with indapamide. Indapamide is a water pill that already nudges your potassium down as it flushes out extra salt and fluid. Green coffee carries caffeine, and in larger amounts caffeine can also pull potassium a bit lower. Stack those two together and, in theory, your potassium could dip more than expected.

I want to be straight with you: this concern is theoretical, based on how these substances work rather than strong studies. Low potassium can cause muscle cramps, weakness, or an irregular heartbeat, so it's worth knowing. A cup of coffee now and then is unlikely to matter, but concentrated green coffee supplements add more caffeine. If you use it regularly, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on your potassium.

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

2 of 2

Indapamide also falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS.

Theoretically, taking green coffee with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Clinical studies have shown that green coffee extract decreases blood pressure. When used with antihypertensive drugs, green coffee might have additive blood pressure-lowering effects. However, this has not been shown in clinical research.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Indapamide is a water pill that helps lower blood pressure by helping your body release extra salt and water. Green coffee has shown a mild blood pressure lowering effect of its own in some studies. So when you pair the two, the concern is simply that the effects could stack a little and nudge your blood pressure lower than expected.

To be clear, this is mostly theoretical, and it has not actually been proven in research with blood pressure medicines. If it did happen, you might feel lightheaded, dizzy when standing up, or unusually tired. One extra wrinkle: green coffee contains caffeine, which can occasionally bump blood pressure up too. None of this means you must avoid green coffee, but it is worth mentioning to your pharmacist or doctor, especially if you take a concentrated supplement rather than an occasional cup.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

About Green Coffee

What is Green Coffee?

Green Coffee
  • Weight loss
  • High blood pressure
  • Blood sugar control
  • Antioxidant support
  • General energy

Green coffee is the unroasted bean of the coffee plant, prized for its high chlorogenic acid content. Some early studies suggest modest benefits for weight, blood pressure, and blood sugar, but the evidence is limited and far from conclusive. It contains caffeine, so people sensitive to stimulants should use caution and check with a pharmacist or doctor first.

About Indapamide

What Is Indapamide Used For?

Brand names: Lozol, Lozide

Indapamide tablets are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), either on their own or together with other blood pressure medications. Lowering blood pressure helps reduce the risk of related complications.

Indapamide tablets are also used to treat salt and fluid retention (edema) associated with congestive heart failure. In certain cases, indapamide may also be appropriate during pregnancy when swelling is caused by a medical condition rather than normal pregnancy changes — but routine use in otherwise healthy pregnant women is not recommended.
