Green Coffee and Dulaglutide

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Dulaglutide

Dulaglutide falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Green Coffee interacts with.

Theoretically, taking green coffee and antidiabetes drugs might interfere with blood glucose control.
In clinical research, green coffee extract results in modest reductions in blood glucose levels in various populations. However, other reports claim that caffeine might increase or decrease blood sugar levels.
Severity Minor Likelihood Unlikely Evidence B

Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for Trulicity (dulaglutide): this is an injectable medicine that lowers your blood sugar, and green coffee can nudge blood sugar too. Some studies show its chlorogenic acid causes a modest drop in blood sugar, while the caffeine part can push numbers either direction. So in theory, pairing them could add up to slightly lower readings, or just make your levels a little less predictable.

The good news is this is rated a minor and unlikely interaction, based on fairly weak evidence. Dulaglutide isn't a prodrug, and green coffee doesn't change how your body handles it. If you do take green coffee regularly, just keep an eye out for low blood sugar signs (shakiness, sweating, dizziness) and check your readings. Run it by your pharmacist or doctor before starting.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Dulaglutide page

“Because dulaglutide (Trulicity) already lowers blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes, nearly every entry on this page deserves genuine respect, and one demands it outright. Almost all of these supplements pull glucose in one direction or the other, so the danger that matters most is hypoglycemia, blood sugar dropping too low.”

About Green Coffee

What is Green Coffee?

Green Coffee
  • Weight loss
  • High blood pressure
  • Blood sugar control
  • Antioxidant support
  • General energy

Green coffee is the unroasted bean of the coffee plant, prized for its high chlorogenic acid content. Some early studies suggest modest benefits for weight, blood pressure, and blood sugar, but the evidence is limited and far from conclusive. It contains caffeine, so people sensitive to stimulants should use caution and check with a pharmacist or doctor first.
