Green coffee can contain caffeine. Caffeine, especially in excessive amounts, can reduce potassium levels due to stimulation of the sodium-potassium pump. Diuretics can also cause lower potassium levels.

Here's the gist with chlorthalidone and green coffee. Chlorthalidone is a water pill that already nudges potassium out of your body through the urine. Green coffee carries caffeine, and in larger amounts caffeine can also push potassium lower. Put the two together and, in theory, your potassium could dip a bit more than it would with the medicine alone.

I want to be honest that this concern is theoretical, based on how these things work rather than strong studies. A normal cup or two of coffee likely won't matter much, but concentrated green coffee supplements deliver more caffeine. Low potassium can show up as muscle cramps, weakness, or an irregular heartbeat. If you want to use this supplement, check with your pharmacist or doctor first, since they may already watch your potassium.

Clinical studies have shown that green coffee extract decreases blood pressure. When used with antihypertensive drugs, green coffee might have additive blood pressure-lowering effects. However, this has not been shown in clinical research.

Here's the simple version. Chlorthalidone is a water pill that lowers your blood pressure by helping your body shed extra salt and water. Green coffee, mostly through its chlorogenic acid, may nudge your blood pressure down a little on its own. Put the two together and you could get a slightly bigger drop than expected.

To be fair, this is mostly theoretical and the studies behind it are on the weaker side, so for most people it's a minor concern. Still, watch for signs of pressure dropping too low: dizziness, lightheadedness when you stand up, or feeling unusually tired. An occasional cup of coffee is unlikely to matter much, but concentrated green coffee supplements are a bigger question. Check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding one.

What Is Chlorthalidone Used For?

Brand names: Hygroton, Thalitone

Chlorthalidone is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of serious cardiovascular events, especially strokes and heart attacks. It can be used alone or combined with other blood pressure medicines.

Chlorthalidone is also used as an add-on treatment for edema (fluid buildup) caused by heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and kidney conditions including nephrotic syndrome, acute glomerulonephritis, and chronic renal failure. Thalitone is additionally indicated for edema associated with heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and renal disease including nephrotic syndrome.
