Green Coffee and Naproxen

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Naproxen

Naproxen falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Green Coffee interacts with.

Theoretically, green coffee may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Green coffee can contain caffeine. Caffeine is reported to have antiplatelet activity. Theoretically, caffeine in green coffee might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with these agents. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans. There is some evidence that caffeinated coffee might increase the fibrinolytic activity in blood.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Unlikely Evidence D

Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the quick picture for naproxen (Naprosyn, Aleve, Anaprox). On its own, naproxen is an NSAID that can nudge up your bleeding risk, mainly by irritating the stomach lining and by reducing how well platelets stick together. Green coffee brings caffeine to the table, and caffeine is thought to have a mild blood-thinning, anti-platelet effect of its own. Put them together and, in theory, those two small effects could add up to a slightly higher chance of bleeding or stomach upset.

I want to be honest about how soft this is. This is a theoretical concern based on how the ingredients behave, not something actually seen happening in people. For most folks it's unlikely to cause trouble. Still, if you notice stomach pain, dark stools, or easy bruising, or if you take naproxen often, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Green Coffee

What is Green Coffee?

Green Coffee
  • Weight loss
  • High blood pressure
  • Blood sugar control
  • Antioxidant support
  • General energy

Green coffee is the unroasted bean of the coffee plant, prized for its high chlorogenic acid content. Some early studies suggest modest benefits for weight, blood pressure, and blood sugar, but the evidence is limited and far from conclusive. It contains caffeine, so people sensitive to stimulants should use caution and check with a pharmacist or doctor first.
