Green Coffee and Pseudoephedrine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Why this applies to Pseudoephedrine

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase stimulant adverse effects.

Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence C

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: green coffee naturally contains caffeine, and Sudafed (pseudoephedrine) is itself a stimulant that narrows blood vessels to clear up a stuffy nose. Pseudoephedrine isn't a prodrug, so nothing here changes how your body activates it. The concern is just that two stimulants together can stack their effects.

When you combine them, you may notice more of pseudoephedrine's usual jittery side effects: a racing or pounding heart, feeling wired or anxious, trouble sleeping, and a bump in blood pressure. To be fair, this is mostly expert caution, not hard proof, and a normal cup of coffee is unlikely to be a big deal for most folks. Concentrated green coffee supplements may carry more caffeine. If you have heart issues or high blood pressure, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Green Coffee

What is Green Coffee?

Green Coffee
  • Weight loss
  • High blood pressure
  • Blood sugar control
  • Antioxidant support
  • General energy

Green coffee is the unroasted bean of the coffee plant, prized for its high chlorogenic acid content. Some early studies suggest modest benefits for weight, blood pressure, and blood sugar, but the evidence is limited and far from conclusive. It contains caffeine, so people sensitive to stimulants should use caution and check with a pharmacist or doctor first.
