Green Coffee and Trichlormethiazide

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Green Coffee interacts with whole categories of medication. Trichlormethiazide falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Green Coffee in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

DIURETIC DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Trichlormethiazide

Trichlormethiazide falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Green Coffee interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the risk of hypokalemia.
Green coffee can contain caffeine. Caffeine, especially in excessive amounts, can reduce potassium levels due to stimulation of the sodium-potassium pump. Diuretics can also cause lower potassium levels.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the simple version: Trichlormethiazide is a thiazide-type water pill, and one of its known quirks is that it can lower your potassium level over time. Green coffee brings caffeine to the table, and caffeine can also nudge potassium down a bit. So the worry is that the two together might push your potassium lower than either would alone.

I want to be honest about how strong this is: it's theoretical, based on how these things work rather than solid studies. Still, if potassium drops too far you might notice muscle cramps, weakness, tiredness, or an irregular heartbeat. A daily cup or two of coffee is usually not the issue, but concentrated green coffee supplements add up. If you're on this water pill, mention any green coffee product to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on your potassium.

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

2 of 2

Trichlormethiazide also falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS.

Theoretically, taking green coffee with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Clinical studies have shown that green coffee extract decreases blood pressure. When used with antihypertensive drugs, green coffee might have additive blood pressure-lowering effects. However, this has not been shown in clinical research.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Trichlormethiazide is a thiazide water pill that lowers blood pressure by helping your body shed extra salt and fluid. Green coffee, thanks to its chlorogenic acid, has shown a mild blood pressure lowering effect of its own in some studies. So when you pair the two, the concern is simply additive: your blood pressure could dip a little lower than expected.

If that happens, you might feel lightheaded, dizzy, or woozy when standing up quickly. Honestly though, the evidence here is thin and the interaction is rated minor and only theoretical, so for most folks this won't cause trouble. Concentrated green coffee supplements are more likely to matter than an occasional cup. If you notice dizziness or low readings at home, just check in with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

About Green Coffee

What is Green Coffee?

Green Coffee
  • Weight loss
  • High blood pressure
  • Blood sugar control
  • Antioxidant support
  • General energy

Green coffee is the unroasted bean of the coffee plant, prized for its high chlorogenic acid content. Some early studies suggest modest benefits for weight, blood pressure, and blood sugar, but the evidence is limited and far from conclusive. It contains caffeine, so people sensitive to stimulants should use caution and check with a pharmacist or doctor first.
