Green Coffee and Acepromazine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

PHENOTHIAZINES

Why this applies to Acepromazine

Acepromazine falls under PHENOTHIAZINES — the group Green Coffee interacts with.

Theoretically, phenothiazines might increase the levels and adverse effects of caffeine.
Green coffee can contain caffeine. Phenothiazines can reduce the metabolism of caffeine by inhibiting cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2).
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for green coffee and acepromazine (Atravet). Acepromazine is a phenothiazine, mostly used as a sedative and tranquilizer in veterinary settings. It can slow down a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which happens to be the same enzyme that clears caffeine. Green coffee naturally contains caffeine, so in theory that caffeine could stick around longer and hit a little harder.

In real life, you might notice more jitteriness, a faster heartbeat, or trouble sleeping. The good news is this is rated minor and is based only on lab-type research, not strong human studies. A normal cup likely won't cause trouble, but concentrated supplement doses are more of a question mark. If you're using both, just check in with your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Acepromazine page

“Alcohol tops my concerns with acepromazine, a phenothiazine tranquilizer. Beer and wine both carry major ratings backed by human data, because they deepen its sedation and can add other side effects.”

About Green Coffee

What is Green Coffee?

Green Coffee
  • Weight loss
  • High blood pressure
  • Blood sugar control
  • Antioxidant support
  • General energy

Green coffee is the unroasted bean of the coffee plant, prized for its high chlorogenic acid content. Some early studies suggest modest benefits for weight, blood pressure, and blood sugar, but the evidence is limited and far from conclusive. It contains caffeine, so people sensitive to stimulants should use caution and check with a pharmacist or doctor first.
