Green Coffee and Benzthiazide

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Green Coffee interacts with whole categories of medication. Benzthiazide falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Green Coffee in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

DIURETIC DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Benzthiazide

Benzthiazide falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Green Coffee interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the risk of hypokalemia.
Green coffee can contain caffeine. Caffeine, especially in excessive amounts, can reduce potassium levels due to stimulation of the sodium-potassium pump. Diuretics can also cause lower potassium levels.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Benzthiazide (Exna) is a thiazide-type water pill, and one of its known effects is lowering potassium as your body sheds extra fluid. Green coffee carries caffeine, and in larger amounts caffeine can nudge potassium lower too. Put the two together and, at least in theory, your potassium could dip a bit more than expected.

I'll be honest with you: this concern is theoretical, based on how these things work rather than strong studies. A cup or two of green coffee likely won't be a problem for most folks, but concentrated supplement doses are where I'd be more careful. Low potassium can cause muscle cramps, weakness, or an irregular heartbeat. If you notice those, or you're combining both regularly, check with your pharmacist or doctor about a potassium check.

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

2 of 2

Benzthiazide also falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS.

Theoretically, taking green coffee with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Clinical studies have shown that green coffee extract decreases blood pressure. When used with antihypertensive drugs, green coffee might have additive blood pressure-lowering effects. However, this has not been shown in clinical research.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Benzthiazide (Exna) is a thiazide-type water pill that lowers blood pressure by helping your body shed extra salt and fluid. Green coffee, thanks to its chlorogenic acid, may gently nudge blood pressure down on its own. So in theory, pairing the two could add up and push your numbers a little lower than expected.

Honestly, this is a minor concern and the research behind it is thin, so most folks won't run into trouble. Still, if you notice dizziness, lightheadedness, feeling faint when you stand up, or unusual tiredness, that may be a sign your pressure dipped too far. Everyday cups of coffee are unlikely to matter much; concentrated green coffee supplements are more of a question. Check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding it.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Benzthiazide page

“Benzthiazide (Exna), a thiazide water pill prescribed for high blood pressure and fluid retention, comes with a supplement list I would treat with genuine respect. Most of what appears here either drops blood pressure further than intended or deepens the potassium and fluid loss the drug already causes, and a handful can strain the kid…”

About Green Coffee

What is Green Coffee?

Green Coffee
  • Weight loss
  • High blood pressure
  • Blood sugar control
  • Antioxidant support
  • General energy

Green coffee is the unroasted bean of the coffee plant, prized for its high chlorogenic acid content. Some early studies suggest modest benefits for weight, blood pressure, and blood sugar, but the evidence is limited and far from conclusive. It contains caffeine, so people sensitive to stimulants should use caution and check with a pharmacist or doctor first.
