Green Coffee and Bumetanide

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Green Coffee interacts with whole categories of medication. Bumetanide falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Green Coffee in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

DIURETIC DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Bumetanide

Bumetanide falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Green Coffee interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the risk of hypokalemia.
Green coffee can contain caffeine. Caffeine, especially in excessive amounts, can reduce potassium levels due to stimulation of the sodium-potassium pump. Diuretics can also cause lower potassium levels.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: bumetanide (Burinex) is a strong water pill that already nudges potassium out of your body through your urine. Green coffee carries caffeine, and caffeine can also lower potassium a bit by shifting how your cells handle it. Stack the two and, in theory, your potassium could dip lower than it would on the medication alone.

I want to be honest about the strength of this concern. It's theoretical, based on how these substances behave, not on solid studies in people. Low potassium can show up as muscle cramps, weakness, fatigue, or an irregular heartbeat. A regular cup of coffee likely won't tip the scales, but concentrated green coffee supplements add up. If you take bumetanide, check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding it, and keep up with any potassium checks they order.

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

2 of 2

Bumetanide also falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS.

Theoretically, taking green coffee with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Clinical studies have shown that green coffee extract decreases blood pressure. When used with antihypertensive drugs, green coffee might have additive blood pressure-lowering effects. However, this has not been shown in clinical research.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: bumetanide (Burinex) is a strong water pill that already lowers blood pressure by pulling extra fluid and salt out of your body. Green coffee, thanks to its chlorogenic acid, may nudge blood pressure down a little too. Stack the two and the effects could add up, so your pressure might dip lower than expected.

Honestly, this is a minor, mostly theoretical concern. Real clinical proof of the combo causing problems isn't there, and small amounts of caffeine from green coffee aren't a big worry. Still, if you notice dizziness, lightheadedness when standing up, or feeling faint, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor. Don't change anything on your own.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

“Bumetanide (Burinex) is a potent loop diuretic, a water pill that pulls off fluid quickly and takes potassium with it, so I treat its interaction list as one of the serious ones. Seven of the 218 ingredients on file carry a major rating, and those belong at the top of your reading.”

About Green Coffee

What is Green Coffee?

Green Coffee
  • Weight loss
  • High blood pressure
  • Blood sugar control
  • Antioxidant support
  • General energy

Green coffee is the unroasted bean of the coffee plant, prized for its high chlorogenic acid content. Some early studies suggest modest benefits for weight, blood pressure, and blood sugar, but the evidence is limited and far from conclusive. It contains caffeine, so people sensitive to stimulants should use caution and check with a pharmacist or doctor first.

About Bumetanide

What Is Bumetanide Used For?

Brand name: Burinex

Bumetanide treats edema — excess fluid that builds up in the body — caused by congestive heart failure, hepatic (liver) disease, and renal (kidney) disease, including a condition called nephrotic syndrome. This applies to the oral tablets (bumetanide and Bumex), the injection (Bumetanide Injection), and the nasal spray.

Enbumyst (bumetanide nasal spray) is specifically approved for these same uses in adults. Enbumyst is not intended for long-term use and should be switched to an oral diuretic as soon as practical.
