Isocarboxazid falls under MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS (MAOIs) — the group Green Coffee interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the risk of a hypertensive crisis.
Green coffee can contain caffeine. Caffeine has been shown to inhibit monoamine oxidase (MAO) A and B in laboratory studies. Concomitant intake of large amounts of caffeine with MAOIs might precipitate a hypertensive crisis.

Here's the thing about Marplan (isocarboxazid): it's an older MAO inhibitor, and these medicines come with a famously long list of food and supplement cautions. Green coffee is worth flagging because it carries caffeine, and stimulants can push your blood pressure up. On top of that, lab studies hint that caffeine itself may block MAO enzymes a bit, which could add to what your medication is already doing.

The worry is a sudden, dangerous spike in blood pressure called a hypertensive crisis, with symptoms like a pounding headache, chest pain, sweating, or a racing heart. To be fair, this is mostly theoretical and more likely with large, concentrated doses than a small amount. Still, with a drug this sensitive, please clear any green coffee supplement with your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Isocarboxazid Used For?

Brand name: Marplan

Marplan (isocarboxazid) is indicated for the treatment of depression — specifically, major depressive disorder. Because it carries serious risks, it is not a first-choice antidepressant. Marplan is generally reserved for patients who have not responded adequately to other antidepressants.

Clinical trials showed Marplan to be effective in adult outpatients with major depressive disorder, including those whose depression was accompanied by anxiety symptoms such as panic or phobias. Marplan is not approved for use in children or adolescents.
