Theoretically, red clover might increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP2C19.

Here's the gist: your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP2C19 to help clear dexlansoprazole. In test-tube studies, red clover seems to weakly slow that same enzyme down. If that happened in real life, dexlansoprazole could hang around a bit longer than usual, which in theory might mean slightly stronger effects or more of its typical side effects, like headache, diarrhea, gas, or stomach upset.

Now the reassuring part: this is only a lab finding, it has not been seen in actual people, and the expected effect is small. Dexlansoprazole is also a pretty forgiving medicine, so a minor bump in levels usually isn't a big deal. Still, if you plan to use red clover regularly, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Dexlansoprazole also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, red clover might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4; however, a small clinical study found no effect.
In vitro evidence shows that red clover might inhibit CYP3A4 isoenzymes. However, a clinical study in healthy postmenopausal individuals shows that taking red clover capsules standardized to contain 60 mg isoflavones twice daily for 14 days does not affect the pharmacokinetics of alprazolam, a CYP3A4 probe substrate.

Here's the short version: this is a very mild, mostly theoretical concern. Red clover's isoflavones might slow down a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, which plays a small part in clearing dexlansoprazole. In a test tube, that could let a little more of the drug hang around, which in theory might nudge up common side effects like headache, stomach upset, or diarrhea.

But the real-world picture is reassuring. When researchers actually tested red clover (standardized to 60 mg isoflavones, twice daily) in people, it didn't meaningfully change how the body handled a CYP3A4 drug. Dexlansoprazole is not a prodrug, so it doesn't rely on this enzyme to start working. For most folks this combo is fine, but check with your pharmacist if you take other medications too.

Red clover is a plant rich in isoflavones (plant compounds with weak estrogen-like activity) that is most often used for menopause symptoms like hot flashes. The evidence is mixed and generally weak, with some studies showing modest benefit and others showing none. What Is Dexlansoprazole Used For?

Brand name: Dexilant Solutab

Dexlansoprazole delayed-release capsules — sold as Dexilant and available as a generic — are used in patients 12 years of age and older to heal erosive esophagitis (EE), which is damage to the esophagus caused by stomach acid. They are also used to keep that damage healed and relieve heartburn over time.

In addition, dexlansoprazole treats heartburn from non-erosive gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) — that is, acid reflux that causes symptoms without visible damage to the esophagus. Both Dexilant and generic dexlansoprazole delayed-release capsules share these same approved uses.
