ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS
Why this applies to Alteplase, tPA
Alteplase, tPA falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Tiratricol interacts with.
Tiratricol is related to thyroid hormones such as levothyroxine. The hypoprothrombinemic effects of oral anticoagulants, including warfarin (Coumadin), are increased by levothyroxine due to increased catabolism of vitamin K-dependent clotting factors. It is not known if tiratricol has a similar effect.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
First, a quick heads-up: tiratricol (TRIAC) is not a safe supplement. The FDA has warned people to stay away from it, so this is really a 'don't use it at all' situation, not a 'be careful' one.
As for the interaction itself, here's the honest picture. The concern on file is theoretical, based on the fact that thyroid-like hormones can thin the blood a bit by speeding up the breakdown of clotting factors. Alteplase (tPA) is a clot-busting drug given in the hospital for things like stroke or a heart attack, and the main risk it already carries is serious bleeding. If tiratricol nudged your clotting in the same direction, it could in theory add to that bleeding risk. This isn't proven for tiratricol, but please tell your doctor or pharmacist about any supplements before receiving tPA.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Alteplase, tPA page
“Nobody plans to receive alteplase (Activase, tPA). It arrives by IV in an emergency to dissolve the clot behind a stroke or heart attack, so the supplements already in your system at that moment matter, and this list deserves real weight.”

About Tiratricol
What is Tiratricol?
- Weight loss
- Fat burning
- Boosting metabolism
- Bodybuilding and cutting
- Thyroid-related supplementation
Tiratricol (also called TRIAC) is a powerful synthetic thyroid hormone metabolite, not a natural herb, and it has been illegally added to some weight-loss and bodybuilding supplements. It can cause serious heart and thyroid problems, and the U.S. FDA has warned consumers not to use products containing it. It is not a safe or approved dietary supplement, and you should avoid it.
