Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing with Corzide. It's a combo pill: bendroflumethiazide (a water pill) plus nadolol (a beta-blocker). The water pill side can gently lower your potassium over time. Yerba mate has caffeine, and in large amounts caffeine can nudge potassium lower too, so in theory the two together could add up.

I want to be honest though, this is a theoretical concern based on how caffeine behaves, not strong proof from real patients. A cup or two of mate is unlikely to be a problem for most folks. Heavy daily intake is where I'd pay closer attention. Low potassium can show up as muscle cramps, weakness, or palpitations, so if you notice those, or you drink a lot of mate, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor. They can check your potassium with a simple blood test.

About Yerba Mate

What is Yerba Mate?

Yerba Mate
  • Energy and alertness
  • Weight loss
  • Mental focus
  • Digestive support
  • Antioxidant support

Yerba mate is a caffeine-containing herbal beverage from South America that is widely enjoyed for its stimulating, coffee-like effects. While it is rich in antioxidants and is being studied for weight, blood sugar, and cholesterol, strong human evidence for most health claims is limited. Drinking very hot mate over many years has been linked to higher risk of certain cancers, so enjoy it warm and in moderation.
