Yerba Mate and Clinafloxacin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS

Why this applies to Clinafloxacin

Clinafloxacin falls under QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS — the group Yerba Mate interacts with.

Theoretically, quinolone antibiotics might increase the levels and adverse effects of the caffeine in yerba mate.
Yerba mate contains caffeine. Quinolones (also called fluoroquinolones) can decrease caffeine clearance by inhibiting cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) enzyme.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence B

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to know if you enjoy yerba mate while you're on clinafloxacin: this is really about the caffeine in the mate, not the antibiotic itself. Clinafloxacin belongs to the fluoroquinolone family, and these drugs can slow down a liver enzyme (CYP1A2) that normally clears caffeine out of your body. So the caffeine sticks around longer than usual.

In practice, that can mean a mate that hits harder than expected: jitteriness, a racing or pounding heart, trouble sleeping, an upset stomach, or feeling wired and anxious. This is considered a moderate, fairly likely interaction, though it's based on limited human data. You don't have to give up your mate, but it's smart to go easy on caffeine during your antibiotic course. Check with your pharmacist or doctor if you have questions.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Clinafloxacin page

“If you have been prescribed clinafloxacin, a quinolone antibiotic, start with the four interactions rated major, because they all do the same thing: apple, grapefruit, and orange juice, along with activated charcoal, can sharply cut how much of the drug you absorb, and an antibiotic that never reaches your bloodstream cannot clear the…”

About Yerba Mate

What is Yerba Mate?

Yerba Mate
  • Energy and alertness
  • Weight loss
  • Mental focus
  • Digestive support
  • Antioxidant support

Yerba mate is a caffeine-containing herbal beverage from South America that is widely enjoyed for its stimulating, coffee-like effects. While it is rich in antioxidants and is being studied for weight, blood sugar, and cholesterol, strong human evidence for most health claims is limited. Drinking very hot mate over many years has been linked to higher risk of certain cancers, so enjoy it warm and in moderation.
