These two interact in 4 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 4 Interactions?
Yerba Mate interacts with whole categories of medication. Ethinyl Estradiol, Norgestimate falls into 4 of those categories, so it can interact with Yerba Mate in 4 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
ESTROGENS
1 of 4Why this applies to Ethinyl Estradiol, Norgestimate
Ethinyl Estradiol, Norgestimate falls under ESTROGENS — the group Yerba Mate interacts with.
Yerba mate contains caffeine. Estrogen inhibits caffeine metabolism.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the thing to know about pairing yerba mate with your birth control pill (the Ortho Tri-Cyclen family). The estrogen part, ethinyl estradiol, can slow down how your liver clears caffeine. Since yerba mate is loaded with caffeine, that caffeine may hang around longer and hit you a bit harder than usual.
In real life, that might mean more jitteriness, a racing or pounding heart, trouble sleeping, or feeling anxious or shaky, especially if you drink several cups. Your birth control still works fine; it's the caffeine effects that get amplified, not the pill that gets weaker. This is a fairly mild, expected effect, so you don't need to panic. If you notice the buzz feels stronger, simply cut back on mate or other caffeine, and check with your pharmacist if you have questions.

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) INHIBITORS
2 of 4Ethinyl Estradiol, Norgestimate also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) INHIBITORS.
Yerba mate contains caffeine. Caffeine is metabolized by CYP1A2. Theoretically, drugs that inhibit CYP1A2 may decrease the rate of caffeine clearance and increase caffeine levels.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thing to understand about this pairing: it's really about the caffeine in yerba mate, not your birth control pill itself. The estrogen part of your pill (ethinyl estradiol) can mildly slow down the liver enzyme (CYP1A2) that clears caffeine from your body. So the mate's caffeine may hang around a little longer than usual.
In practice, that could mean you feel the caffeine more strongly. Think jitteriness, a racing heart, trouble sleeping, or feeling wired. This is only a theoretical, minor interaction based on how the drugs work, and it doesn't make your pill less effective at preventing pregnancy. If you notice you're extra sensitive to caffeine, just ease up on the mate. Any questions, your pharmacist is happy to help.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
3 of 4Ethinyl Estradiol, Norgestimate also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that yerba mate extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking yerba mate may increase levels and adverse effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the short version about your birth control pill (the ethinyl estradiol and norgestimate combo, sold as Sprintec, Ortho Tri-Cyclen, and others). Lab dish studies suggest yerba mate may gently slow down CYP3A4, one of the liver enzymes that helps clear the estrogen part of your pill. In theory, that could let hormone levels run a touch higher, which might mean a bit more nausea, breast tenderness, bloating, or spotting.
Honestly, though, this is a minor, theory-only concern based on test-tube research, not real people. A cup or two of mate is very unlikely to cause trouble. If you drink large amounts daily or use concentrated extracts and notice new side effects, just check with your pharmacist or doctor.

CONTRACEPTIVE DRUGS
4 of 4Ethinyl Estradiol, Norgestimate also falls under CONTRACEPTIVE DRUGS.
Yerba mate contains caffeine. Contraceptive drugs decrease the rate of caffeine clearance by 40% to 65%.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thing to know about pairing yerba mate with your birth control pill (Ortho Tri-Cyclen and similar). The interaction here isn't your pill being weakened. Instead, it works the other way around: the estrogen in your pill slows down how fast your body clears caffeine, by roughly 40% to 65%. So the caffeine from your mate sticks around longer and hits a little harder.
In plain terms, you may feel more of the usual caffeine effects, like feeling jittery, a racing heart, trouble sleeping, or an upset stomach, even from a normal amount. This is rated minor and is mostly theoretical, so it's not dangerous. If you notice you're wired, just ease back on the mate. Chat with your pharmacist if you have questions.

About Yerba Mate
What is Yerba Mate?
- Energy and alertness
- Weight loss
- Mental focus
- Digestive support
- Antioxidant support
Yerba mate is a caffeine-containing herbal beverage from South America that is widely enjoyed for its stimulating, coffee-like effects. While it is rich in antioxidants and is being studied for weight, blood sugar, and cholesterol, strong human evidence for most health claims is limited. Drinking very hot mate over many years has been linked to higher risk of certain cancers, so enjoy it warm and in moderation.
