These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Yerba Mate interacts with whole categories of medication. Fluticasone Proprionate, Salmeterol falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Yerba Mate in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
BETA-ADRENERGIC AGONISTS
1 of 2Why this applies to Fluticasone Proprionate, Salmeterol
Fluticasone Proprionate, Salmeterol falls under BETA-ADRENERGIC AGONISTS — the group Yerba Mate interacts with.
Yerba mate contains caffeine. Caffeine can increase cardiac inotropic effects of beta-agonists.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the simple version. Your Airduo inhaler pairs a steroid (fluticasone) with salmeterol, which is a long-acting beta-agonist that opens up your airways. Salmeterol can gently rev up the heart, and the caffeine in yerba mate does a similar thing. Stack the two and you might feel that effect a little more, like a racing or pounding heartbeat, jitteriness, or trouble settling down.
I want to be honest about the strength of this: it's mostly theoretical, based on how these things work rather than strong studies. A casual cup of mate likely won't cause trouble for most people. The concern is large amounts of mate (or mate plus coffee and energy drinks) on top of your regular inhaler. If you notice palpitations or feel wired, ease up and check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Fluticasone Proprionate, Salmeterol also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that yerba mate extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking yerba mate may increase levels and adverse effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with Airduo Respiclick (fluticasone plus salmeterol) and yerba mate. Your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear both of these medicines. Lab studies suggest yerba mate may slow that enzyme down a little, which in theory could let a bit more of these drugs linger in your system. If that happened, you might notice a touch more of the usual side effects, like a faster heartbeat, jitteriness, a slight tremor in your hands, or trouble sleeping.
That said, this is based only on test-tube research, not real people, and it's rated as a minor concern. For most folks enjoying mate in normal amounts, it's unlikely to cause trouble. Still, if you feel extra wired or your heart races, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

“Airduo Respiclick pairs fluticasone propionate with salmeterol to control asthma, and salmeterol is the half that makes supplement choices matter. It is cleared by the CYP3A4 enzyme and can affect heart rhythm when its levels climb, and seven of the 144 interacting ingredients carry a major rating, enough that I read this page as a gen…”

About Yerba Mate
What is Yerba Mate?
- Energy and alertness
- Weight loss
- Mental focus
- Digestive support
- Antioxidant support
Yerba mate is a caffeine-containing herbal beverage from South America that is widely enjoyed for its stimulating, coffee-like effects. While it is rich in antioxidants and is being studied for weight, blood sugar, and cholesterol, strong human evidence for most health claims is limited. Drinking very hot mate over many years has been linked to higher risk of certain cancers, so enjoy it warm and in moderation.
