Here's the gist: Levemir (insulin detemir) is your long-acting background insulin, and the caffeine in yerba mate could nudge your blood sugar a little in either direction. The reports are mixed, with some saying caffeine raises blood sugar and others saying it can lower it, so this isn't a strong or predictable effect.

What this means for you in real life is mostly minor. If you drink a lot of mate, just keep an eye out for blood sugar swings, whether that's running higher than usual or feeling shaky, sweaty, or lightheaded from a low. An occasional cup is unlikely to throw things off. If you notice your numbers changing after adding mate to your routine, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before changing your insulin.

Brand name: Levemir

Levemir (insulin detemir) is used to improve blood sugar (glucose) control in adults and children with type 1 diabetes or type 2 diabetes. It is a basal insulin, meaning it works around the clock to keep background blood sugar levels steady.

Levemir is not recommended for treating diabetic ketoacidosis (a dangerous buildup of acids in the blood that requires a different type of insulin).
