Theoretically, quinolone antibiotics might increase the levels and adverse effects of the caffeine in yerba mate.
Yerba mate contains caffeine. Quinolones (also called fluoroquinolones) can decrease caffeine clearance by inhibiting cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) enzyme.

Here's the thing to know if you sip yerba mate while taking norfloxacin. This antibiotic can slow down a liver enzyme (called CYP1A2) that normally clears caffeine out of your body. Yerba mate is naturally loaded with caffeine, so while you're on norfloxacin that caffeine tends to hang around longer than usual and build up.

In real life, that can mean more of the jittery, caffeine-type effects: feeling wired, a racing or pounding heartbeat, trouble sleeping, restlessness, or an upset stomach. It's not dangerous for most people, just uncomfortable. An easy fix is to go easy on the mate (and other caffeine like coffee or energy drinks) during your short antibiotic course. If you have heart rhythm concerns, check with your pharmacist first.

Theoretically, concomitant use of CYP1A2 inhibitors and yerba mate might increase levels and adverse effects of the caffeine in yerba mate.

Here's the gist for these two together. Norfloxacin is an antibiotic that happens to slow down a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, and that same enzyme is what your body uses to clear caffeine. Since yerba mate is loaded with caffeine, taking it while you're on norfloxacin means the caffeine can hang around longer than usual and pile up a bit.

In real life, that might leave you feeling jittery, restless, or wired, with a racing heart or trouble sleeping. The good news is this is rated as a minor, mostly theoretical concern based on how the drugs work, not strong human studies. If you notice you're buzzing more than normal, just ease back on the mate and chat with your pharmacist or doctor.
