Here's the simple version for Kombiglyze (that's saxagliptin paired with extended-release metformin). The concern isn't really about how your body breaks down these medicines. It's the caffeine in yerba mate. Caffeine has a bit of a reputation for nudging blood sugar in either direction, so in theory it could make your numbers a little less steady while you're working to keep them controlled.

Honestly though, this is a minor, unlikely interaction built on weak evidence, so a cup or two of mate probably won't throw things off. Just be aware that lots of caffeine, or any jittery feeling, can sometimes mimic or mask a low or high. If you notice shaky, sweaty, or unusually tired spells, check your glucose and chat with your pharmacist or doctor before making any changes.

Here's the deal with Kombiglyze (which is saxagliptin plus extended-release metformin) and yerba mate. The interaction here isn't really about your diabetes control. It's about the caffeine in the mate. Some animal studies hint that the metformin part might slow how your body clears caffeine, so the caffeine could hang around a bit longer than usual. If that happened, you might feel more of the typical caffeine effects: jitteriness, a racing heart, trouble sleeping, or feeling wired.

The honest truth is this is theoretical. It has only been seen in animals, not in people, and it's rated as minor. A cup or two of mate is unlikely to cause trouble for most folks. If you notice you feel extra jittery or your sleep suffers, just ease up on the mate and mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.
