HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Gotu Kala/Centella Asiatica Extract by Herbadiet
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: Centella asiatica (gotu kola) leaf extract powder. Gotu kola has been used traditionally to support circulation and wound healing.
There are no inactive fillers or other ingredients listed in this formulation.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for gotu kola varies by use. It's possibly effective for venous insufficiency—a condition where blood doesn't flow well in your veins—and for certain types of burns.
For radiation dermatitis (skin damage from radiation therapy), the evidence suggests it's probably not effective. For cognitive function and Alzheimer's disease, the evidence we hold is too limited to say whether it works.
The same goes for generalized anxiety—there's not enough reliable data to rate it either way.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Gotu kola is generally well tolerated in the short term, though quality evidence is limited. The most common side effects from taking it by mouth are stomach irritation and nausea.
When applied to skin, it may cause eczema or allergic contact dermatitis (rash, itching, and burning). There's a rare concern about liver toxicity; a few cases have been reported, but contamination in those products couldn't be ruled out, and a monitored trial at 120 mg daily for 6 months showed no liver function changes.
The data advises against use during pregnancy, and safety during breastfeeding is unknown, so it's best avoided while nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check if you use CNS depressants—sedatives, sleep aids, anxiety medications, or anything that makes you drowsy (Moderate severity). Also flag any medications known to affect your liver, including hepatotoxic drugs (Moderate severity).
Use the interaction tool below to confirm your exact medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Gotu kola may help with venous circulation or certain burns, but the evidence is mixed for other uses. If you take sedatives, sleep aids, anti-anxiety drugs, or any hepatotoxic medications, check with your pharmacist before starting.
The liver-toxicity reports are rare and unconfirmed, but they're worth being aware of. Avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Centella asiatica leaf extract powder monograph & interactionsGotu Kala/Centella Asiatica Extract by Herbadiet Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Centella asiatica (gotu kola) extract may interact with medications, mainly through two pathways.
The biggest concern is with CNS depressants—drugs that slow down your brain and nervous system like sedatives, sleep aids, and some anxiety medications. Taking gotu kola alongside these could theoretically increase drowsiness and sedation; lab work suggests gotu kola may bind to GABA receptors, which are involved in calming effects.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The other significant interaction involves hepatotoxic drugs—medications known to stress the liver. There's a theoretical risk of additive harm if you combine them with gotu kola.
While there are a few case reports of liver problems linked to gotu kola use, it's unclear whether gotu kola was the actual cause, and a controlled trial of 120 mg daily for 6 months showed no changes in liver function.
Altogether, these interactions span 563 individual medications. Before you start this product, especially if you take sedatives, sleep aids, anti-anxiety drugs, or any medication that can affect your liver, use the interaction checker below with your exact drug names.
