Ethacrynic Acid falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Chanca Piedra interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of chanca piedra with diuretics might increase diuresis.
Some preliminary clinical research in adults with hypertension shows that chanca piedra has diuretic properties. However, higher quality research in adults with kidney stones shows taking chanca piedra does not increase urine volume when compared with placebo. Until more is known, use cautiously in patients taking diuretic drugs.

Here's the simple version. Ethacrynic acid (Edecrin) is a potent water pill that pushes your kidneys to dump extra salt and water into your urine. The thought is that chanca piedra may have a mild water-pill effect of its own, so taking the two together could stack up and pull out a little more fluid than expected.

If that happened, you might notice things like lightheadedness when you stand, extra thirst, dry mouth, leg cramps, or a faster heartbeat, which can point to dehydration or low potassium. I want to be honest though: this is mostly a theoretical concern, and the better human studies didn't actually show more urine output. Please don't stop either one. Just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up so they can keep an eye on your fluids and electrolytes.

Theoretically, concomitant use of chanca piedra with antihypertensive drugs might have additive blood pressure lowering effects.
Animal research suggests that chanca piedra can decrease blood pressure. However, this effect was not observed in most hypertensive patients treated with chanca piedra for 10 days.

Here's the gist with Edecrin (ethacrynic acid) and chanca piedra. Ethacrynic acid is a strong water pill that pulls extra fluid and salt out through your urine, which can lower your blood pressure a bit as a side effect. Chanca piedra, in animal studies, has shown a mild blood-pressure-lowering effect of its own. So in theory, taking the two together could nudge your blood pressure a little lower than the medication alone.

I want to be honest about how weak this is. The evidence is mostly lab and animal based, and in a small human study most people on chanca piedra didn't actually see a drop. Still, if you ever feel dizzy, lightheaded, or unusually weak, that's worth mentioning. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Ethacrynic Acid Used For?

Brand name: Edecrin

Ethacrynic acid tablets (sold as Edecrin and Ethacrynic Acid) are used to treat edema — fluid buildup in the body — when stronger-than-usual diuretic action is needed. It is approved for edema related to congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, and kidney disease, including nephrotic syndrome.

It is also used for short-term management of fluid buildup from malignancy, idiopathic edema, and lymphedema, as well as short-term treatment of hospitalized children (not infants) with congenital heart disease or nephrotic syndrome.
