Chanca Piedra and Hydrochlorothiazide, Quinapril

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Chanca Piedra interacts with whole categories of medication. Hydrochlorothiazide, Quinapril falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Chanca Piedra in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

DIURETIC DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Hydrochlorothiazide, Quinapril

Hydrochlorothiazide, Quinapril falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Chanca Piedra interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of chanca piedra with diuretics might increase diuresis.
Some preliminary clinical research in adults with hypertension shows that chanca piedra has diuretic properties. However, higher quality research in adults with kidney stones shows taking chanca piedra does not increase urine volume when compared with placebo. Until more is known, use cautiously in patients taking diuretic drugs.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Your Accuretic combines two blood pressure medicines: hydrochlorothiazide (a water pill) and quinapril (an ACE inhibitor). The idea here is fairly simple. Chanca piedra has long been used to encourage urination, so on paper it might add a little extra to the fluid-losing effect of the hydrochlorothiazide part. If that happens, you could in theory feel more lightheaded, dizzy, or dehydrated, and you might urinate more often.

That said, this is mostly theoretical. The evidence is mixed, and one good study in people with kidney stones found chanca piedra did not actually increase urine volume. So for most folks this is a small, uncertain concern. Still, since both can affect your fluids and blood pressure, check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding it, and watch for dizziness when standing.

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

2 of 2

Hydrochlorothiazide, Quinapril also falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS.

Theoretically, concomitant use of chanca piedra with antihypertensive drugs might have additive blood pressure lowering effects.
Animal research suggests that chanca piedra can decrease blood pressure. However, this effect was not observed in most hypertensive patients treated with chanca piedra for 10 days.
Severity Minor Likelihood Unlikely Evidence D

Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Accuretic combines two blood pressure medicines: hydrochlorothiazide (a water pill) and quinapril (an ACE inhibitor). The concern here is simple. Chanca piedra may gently nudge your blood pressure down on its own, so taking it alongside a medicine that already lowers blood pressure could, in theory, push things a little too low.

If that happened, you might feel lightheaded, dizzy, or tired, especially when standing up quickly. But honestly, this is mostly a theoretical worry. The blood pressure drop showed up in animal studies, and in a small human study most people on chanca piedra didn't see this effect. It's rated minor and unlikely. Still, if you take Accuretic and want to try chanca piedra, check with your pharmacist or doctor first, and keep an eye on how you feel.

About Chanca Piedra

What is Chanca Piedra?

Chanca Piedra
  • Kidney stones
  • Gallstones
  • Liver support
  • Urinary tract health
  • Digestive complaints

Chanca piedra is a tropical herb traditionally used as a 'stone breaker' for kidney and gallstones, and for liver and urinary health. Human evidence for these uses is limited and mostly small or preliminary, so it should not replace proven treatments. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a medical condition or take medications.
