Chanca Piedra and Hydroflumethiazide

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Chanca Piedra interacts with whole categories of medication. Hydroflumethiazide falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Chanca Piedra in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

DIURETIC DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Hydroflumethiazide

Hydroflumethiazide falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Chanca Piedra interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of chanca piedra with diuretics might increase diuresis.
Some preliminary clinical research in adults with hypertension shows that chanca piedra has diuretic properties. However, higher quality research in adults with kidney stones shows taking chanca piedra does not increase urine volume when compared with placebo. Until more is known, use cautiously in patients taking diuretic drugs.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the simple version. Hydroflumethiazide (Saluron) is a water pill, so it already makes you pee more to help lower blood pressure and reduce fluid buildup. Some early studies hint that chanca piedra might have a mild water-pill effect of its own. So the worry is that the two together could nudge your fluid loss a little further.

If that happened, you might notice things like feeling lightheaded when you stand, extra thirst, dry mouth, muscle cramps, or weakness, which can signal dehydration or low potassium or sodium. That said, this is theoretical and based mostly on how the herb might work, not strong proof. In fact, a better study in people with kidney stones found no extra urine output. I wouldn't panic, but do mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially if your blood pressure or labs run low.

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

2 of 2

Hydroflumethiazide also falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS.

Theoretically, concomitant use of chanca piedra with antihypertensive drugs might have additive blood pressure lowering effects.
Animal research suggests that chanca piedra can decrease blood pressure. However, this effect was not observed in most hypertensive patients treated with chanca piedra for 10 days.
Severity Minor Likelihood Unlikely Evidence D

Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Hydroflumethiazide (Saluron) is a thiazide-type water pill that lowers blood pressure by helping your body get rid of extra salt and fluid. The concern here is pretty simple: chanca piedra might also nudge your blood pressure down a little, so taking the two together could add up and push your pressure lower than expected.

If that happened, you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, or tired, especially when standing up quickly. But honestly, this is a theoretical worry. It comes mostly from animal studies, and a small human study didn't see a real drop over 10 days. For most folks this is unlikely to cause trouble. Still, if you take Saluron and want to try chanca piedra, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first, and keep an eye on your blood pressure.

About Chanca Piedra

What is Chanca Piedra?

Chanca Piedra
  • Kidney stones
  • Gallstones
  • Liver support
  • Urinary tract health
  • Digestive complaints

Chanca piedra is a tropical herb traditionally used as a 'stone breaker' for kidney and gallstones, and for liver and urinary health. Human evidence for these uses is limited and mostly small or preliminary, so it should not replace proven treatments. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a medical condition or take medications.
