Cola nut contains caffeine. In excessive amounts, caffeine can reduce potassium levels due to stimulation of the sodium-potassium pump. Certain diuretics can also lower potassium levels.

Here's the gist with cola nut and ethacrynic acid (Edecrin). Ethacrynic acid is a strong loop diuretic, and one thing it can do is push your potassium levels down as it flushes out water and salt. Cola nut is basically a caffeine source, and in large amounts caffeine can nudge potassium into your cells, lowering it a little more. So the concern is that stacking the two could leave your potassium lower than you'd want.

This is a theoretical worry based on how these work, not something proven in studies, so try not to panic. But low potassium can cause muscle cramps, weakness, or an irregular heartbeat, which matters with a potent water pill. An occasional cola drink is unlikely to be a problem, but regular concentrated cola nut supplements are worth running past your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Ethacrynic Acid Used For?

Brand name: Edecrin

Ethacrynic acid tablets (sold as Edecrin and Ethacrynic Acid) are used to treat edema — excess fluid that builds up in the body — when other, milder diuretics aren't strong enough. It treats edema related to congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, and kidney disease, including nephrotic syndrome (a kidney condition that causes protein loss and swelling).

It is also used for short-term management of fluid buildup from malignancy (cancer-related ascites), idiopathic edema (swelling with no clear cause), and lymphedema (swelling from a blocked lymph system). In hospitalized children (not infants), it may be used short-term for edema related to congenital heart disease or nephrotic syndrome.
