Cola Nut and Methyclothiazide

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

DIURETIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Methyclothiazide

Methyclothiazide falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Cola Nut interacts with.

Theoretically, using cola nut with diuretic drugs might increase the risk of hypokalemia.
Cola nut contains caffeine. In excessive amounts, caffeine can reduce potassium levels due to stimulation of the sodium-potassium pump. Certain diuretics can also lower potassium levels.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version. Methyclothiazide is a thiazide water pill, and one of its known quirks is that it can lower your potassium over time. Cola nut is basically a caffeine source, and large amounts of caffeine may also nudge potassium down by pushing it into your cells. Stack the two together and, in theory, you could end up a little lower on potassium than either would cause alone.

Honestly, this concern is based on how the ingredients work rather than strong real-world studies, so I wouldn't panic. Low potassium can show up as muscle cramps, weakness, or an irregular heartbeat. Occasional caffeine is usually fine, but heavy cola nut supplement use is where I'd be careful. Check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and ask if your potassium should be watched.

About Cola Nut

What is Cola Nut?

Cola Nut
  • Energy and alertness
  • Mental focus
  • Physical performance
  • Weight loss support
  • Traditional digestive aid

Cola nut is a caffeine-containing seed from West Africa used mainly as a natural stimulant for energy and alertness. Most of its effects come from caffeine, and strong human evidence for specific health benefits is limited. Because of its caffeine content, people sensitive to stimulants and those who are pregnant or have heart conditions should be cautious.

About Methyclothiazide

What Is Methyclothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Enduron, Aquatensen

  • Methyclothiazide is used to treat high blood pressure. Methyclothiazide is also used to treat edema (fluid retention; excess fluid held in body tissues) caused by various medical problems, including heart, kidney, and liver disease and to treat edema caused by using certain medications including estrogen and corticosteroids. Methyclothiazide is in a class of medications called diuretics ('water pills'). It works by causing the kidneys to get rid of unneeded water and salt from the body into the urine.

  • High blood pressure is a common condition and when not treated, can cause damage to the brain, heart, blood vessels, kidneys and other parts of the body. Damage to these organs may cause heart disease, a heart attack, heart failure, stroke, kidney failure, loss of vision, and other problems. In addition to taking medication, making lifestyle changes will also help to control your blood pressure. These changes include eating a diet that is low in fat and salt, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising at least 30 minutes most days, not smoking, and using alcohol in moderation.
