Ephedra and Aminophylline, Amobarbital, Ephedrine

These two interact in 3 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 3 Interactions?

Ephedra interacts with whole categories of medication. Aminophylline, Amobarbital, Ephedrine falls into 3 of those categories, so it can interact with Ephedra in 3 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Major).

Major

STIMULANT DRUGS

1 of 3

Why this applies to Aminophylline, Amobarbital, Ephedrine

Aminophylline, Amobarbital, Ephedrine falls under STIMULANT DRUGS — the group Ephedra interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the risk for serious adverse effects.
Drugs with CNS stimulant properties might increase the risk of hypertension and the adverse cardiovascular effects of ephedra.
Severity Major Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the tricky part with this particular product (Amesec): it already contains ephedrine, which is the same stimulant found in ephedra. It also has aminophylline, a theophylline-type drug that revs up the heart and nervous system too. So if you add an ephedra supplement on top, you're essentially stacking stimulant on stimulant.

That doubling-up can push your heart rate and blood pressure higher than intended. Realistically that means a racing or pounding heartbeat, jitteriness, trouble sleeping, headache, and in serious cases dangerously high blood pressure. This combination is rated Major for good reason. The evidence here is mostly anecdotal, but ephedra is banned in U.S. supplements anyway. Please don't pair them, and talk with your pharmacist or doctor about safer options.

METHYLXANTHINES

2 of 3

Aminophylline, Amobarbital, Ephedrine also falls under METHYLXANTHINES.

Concomitant use might increase the risk of serious adverse effects.
Use of ephedra with caffeine or other methylxanthines such as theophylline might increase the risk of stimulatory adverse effects. There is also some evidence that using ephedra with caffeine might increase the risk of serious life-threatening or debilitating adverse effects such as hypertension, myocardial infarction (MI), stroke, seizures, and death.
Severity Major Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the tricky part with Amesec: this medicine already contains ephedrine, plus aminophylline (a methylxanthine, in the same family as theophylline and caffeine). Both are stimulants. If you add an ephedra supplement on top, you're essentially doubling up on those same stimulant effects. This isn't about one blocking or speeding up the other in the liver, it's a piling-on problem where the effects add together and can get out of hand.

What that can feel like: a racing or pounding heart, jitteriness, trouble sleeping, headache, and rising blood pressure. In serious cases people have had dangerous spikes in blood pressure, irregular heartbeats, seizures, or even stroke. Ephedra is banned in U.S. supplements for exactly these reasons. Please don't combine them, and check with your pharmacist or doctor about safer options.

ANTICONVULSANTS

3 of 3

Aminophylline, Amobarbital, Ephedrine also falls under ANTICONVULSANTS.

Theoretically, ephedra may reduce the effects of anticonvulsants.
Ephedra has been associated with reports of seizure.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the tricky part with this combination product (Amesec): one of its own ingredients, ephedrine, is the very same stimulant found in ephedra. So if you take ephedra on top of a medicine that already contains ephedrine, you're essentially doubling up on a powerful stimulant. That can stack the side effects, think a racing or pounding heart, jitteriness, anxiety, trouble sleeping, and higher blood pressure.

On the seizure-control side, the concern is mostly theoretical and based on how these stimulants behave rather than strong studies. Ephedra has been tied to reports of seizures, so in theory it could work against your seizure protection. Because ephedra is banned and risky, please don't add it. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor about safer choices.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Aminophylline, Amobarbital, Ephedrine page

“Amesec is an unusual mix, a sedative barbiturate (amobarbital) plus the stimulant ephedrine and the asthma drug aminophylline, so its interaction list pulls hard in both directions and deserves real care, with 21 of the 151 ingredients rated major. The most everyday hazard is caffeine.”

Ephedra (ma huang) contains powerful stimulants like ephedrine that affect the heart and nervous system.
