Theoretically, ephedra might decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
Some animal research suggests that ephedra induces CYP1A2 and increases the clearance of CYP1A2 substrates such as caffeine.

Here's the idea behind this one. Your birth control pill (a mix of ethinyl estradiol and norethindrone) is partly broken down by a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. Some animal research hints that ephedra may speed that enzyme up, which could clear the hormones from your body a little faster. In theory, lower hormone levels might make the pill less reliable, and you could notice breakthrough bleeding or spotting.

I want to be honest about how shaky this evidence is. It comes from lab and animal studies, not real patients, so the actual risk is uncertain. The bigger concern with ephedra is its stimulant effects on your heart and blood pressure, and it's banned in U.S. supplements for that reason. Please don't use it. If you want safer options, your pharmacist or doctor can help.

Here's the concern with combining ephedra and your birth control pill (the ethinyl estradiol plus norethindrone combo). Both can put stress on the liver. Estrogen-containing pills already give the liver some work to do, and ephedra supplements have been tied to real cases of liver injury. Put them together and you may add to that strain, at least in theory. This isn't about ephedra weakening or boosting your pill's effect. It's about both being potentially hard on the liver at the same time.

Honestly though, my bigger worry is that ephedra is banned in U.S. supplements for good reason. It can spike blood pressure and stress the heart. I'd skip it entirely and chat with your pharmacist or doctor about safer options.
