Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing with this combo: your medication contains theophylline, which the liver clears using the same pathway it uses for caffeine. Green coffee carries caffeine of its own, and in larger amounts that caffeine can slow how fast your body breaks theophylline down. The result is that theophylline may build up higher than expected.

Theophylline already has a narrow safety window, so even a small bump in its level can matter. Watch for jitteriness, a racing or pounding heart, nausea, trouble sleeping, or shakiness. The guaifenesin part isn't the concern here. A morning cup of regular coffee usually isn't a big deal, but concentrated green coffee supplements are different. Please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before adding one.

About Green Coffee

What is Green Coffee?

Green Coffee
  • Weight loss
  • High blood pressure
  • Blood sugar control
  • Antioxidant support
  • General energy

Green coffee is the unroasted bean of the coffee plant, prized for its high chlorogenic acid content. Some early studies suggest modest benefits for weight, blood pressure, and blood sugar, but the evidence is limited and far from conclusive. It contains caffeine, so people sensitive to stimulants should use caution and check with a pharmacist or doctor first.
