Green Coffee and Mexiletine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

MEXILETINE (Mexitil)

Theoretically, mexiletine might increase the levels and adverse effects of caffeine.
Green coffee can contain caffeine. Mexiletine can decrease caffeine elimination by 50%.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to know about this combo: it's really the caffeine in green coffee that gets affected, not your heart rhythm medication. Mexiletine can slow down how fast your body clears caffeine, by roughly half in some studies. So the caffeine from a green coffee supplement may hang around longer and hit harder than you'd expect.

In plain terms, you might feel more of the jittery stuff: a racing or pounding heartbeat, trouble sleeping, restlessness, or feeling wired. That's worth paying attention to since you're already managing a heart rhythm issue. This is a fairly minor, theoretical interaction, but if you notice those symptoms, scale back the caffeine and check in with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Mexiletine page

“Mexiletine (Mexitil) steadies the heart's rhythm, and its benefit depends on holding a fairly precise blood level, so the 152 supplements on this list deserve real attention rather than a shrug. Only one entry, activated charcoal, is rated major, because it can soak up the drug in the gut and cut how much actually reaches your bloodstr…”

About Green Coffee

What is Green Coffee?

Green Coffee
  • Weight loss
  • High blood pressure
  • Blood sugar control
  • Antioxidant support
  • General energy

Green coffee is the unroasted bean of the coffee plant, prized for its high chlorogenic acid content. Some early studies suggest modest benefits for weight, blood pressure, and blood sugar, but the evidence is limited and far from conclusive. It contains caffeine, so people sensitive to stimulants should use caution and check with a pharmacist or doctor first.

About Mexiletine

What Is Mexiletine Used For?

Brand name: Mexitil

Mexiletine Hydrochloride capsules are indicated for the treatment of documented, life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias — for example, sustained ventricular tachycardia (a dangerously fast heart rhythm originating in the lower chambers). Because mexiletine itself can trigger arrhythmias, it is not recommended for minor or symptom-free irregular heartbeats.

Treatment is started in a hospital setting so heart rhythm can be monitored closely. Antiarrhythmic drugs, including mexiletine, have not been shown to improve overall survival in patients with ventricular arrhythmias.
