Green Coffee and Nusinersen Sodium

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Nusinersen Sodium

Nusinersen Sodium falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Green Coffee interacts with.

Theoretically, green coffee may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Green coffee can contain caffeine. Caffeine is reported to have antiplatelet activity. Theoretically, caffeine in green coffee might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with these agents. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans. There is some evidence that caffeinated coffee might increase the fibrinolytic activity in blood.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the honest picture with Spinraza (nusinersen) and green coffee. The interaction we have on file is really about caffeine in green coffee, which may have a mild blood-thinning (antiplatelet) effect. This concern was filed under anticoagulant and antiplatelet medicines, but Spinraza doesn't really fit that group. It's an injection given into the spinal fluid to boost a protein your nerves and muscles need, and it isn't a blood thinner.

That said, Spinraza can lower platelet counts and affect clotting in some people, so adding anything that nudges bleeding risk is worth a quick mention. This is theoretical only and hasn't been seen in real patients. Still, run your supplements past your care team, especially since your blood is monitored during treatment.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Nusinersen Sodium page

“Spinraza (nusinersen) is given by spinal injection to treat spinal muscular atrophy, and it carries its own warnings for low platelets and kidney stress, which makes the 208 supplements on this page worth real vigilance rather than a shrug. All but six of them, 202 ingredients, could raise bleeding risk by thinning the blood or dulling…”

About Green Coffee

What is Green Coffee?

Green Coffee
  • Weight loss
  • High blood pressure
  • Blood sugar control
  • Antioxidant support
  • General energy

Green coffee is the unroasted bean of the coffee plant, prized for its high chlorogenic acid content. Some early studies suggest modest benefits for weight, blood pressure, and blood sugar, but the evidence is limited and far from conclusive. It contains caffeine, so people sensitive to stimulants should use caution and check with a pharmacist or doctor first.

About Nusinersen Injection

What Is Nusinersen Injection Used For?

Brand name: Spinraza

Spinraza (nusinersen) is used to treat spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) — a genetic disease that causes progressive muscle weakness by reducing the body's ability to make a protein called SMN (survival motor neuron). Spinraza is approved for pediatric and adult patients with SMA.

Spinraza is given by intrathecal injection — directly into the fluid surrounding the spinal cord — so the medicine can reach the central nervous system where it's needed most.
