Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Acetaminophen, Chlorpheniramine, Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide
Acetaminophen, Chlorpheniramine, Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Rauvolfia Vomitoria interacts with.
Rauvolfia vomitoria contains small amounts of the drug yohimbine. In vitro research shows that yohimbine inhibits CYP2D6 enzyme activity.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for this combo cold medicine. One of its three ingredients, dextromethorphan (the cough suppressant), is cleared from your body mainly by a liver enzyme called CYP2D6. Rauvolfia vomitoria contains a little yohimbine, and in lab dish studies yohimbine can slow that same enzyme down. In theory, that could let dextromethorphan build up and hit harder, meaning more drowsiness, dizziness, confusion, or feeling restless or off.
I want to be honest though: this is only test-tube evidence, not something proven in people, and the yohimbine amount is small. So I'd file it as a heads-up, not an alarm. Since Rauvolfia also strongly affects blood pressure and mood, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing the two.
